Amsterdam and Diamonds

Apr-27-2010 Posted under Travel Insurance

Amsterdam takes a special place in the world of Diamonds. Walking down the streets you will see a lot of Diamond and jewelry stores as well as a lot of places that are locked up with signs saying “guided diamond tours from 2 to 4 PM”.

Actually going on some of these tours you’ll have a chance to see some fantastic diamonds and you’ll have a chance as well to see how they are cut and polished. And if you want to, you can buy them for $4000 to $400,000 each.

Amsterdam has a long history relating to diamonds, and has been a major diamond centre since Sephardic Jews introduced the diamond cutting industry in the later 16th century. Nowadays there are about a dozen diamond factories in the city, five of which offer guided tours. The tours are free and are usually conducted 9am to 5pm every day.

These are some of the companies offering guided tours:

Nowadays there are about a dozen diamond factories in the city, five of which offer guided tours. The tours are free and are usually conducted 9am to 5pm every day. Diamonds aren’t necessarily cheaper in Amsterdam but prices are fairly competitive. At least you will have seen how they are worked, and when you buy from a factory you get an extensive description of the purchase so you know exactly what you are buying.

Diamond tours

The following renowned diamond stores offer diamond-cutting and polishing tours, and sales of the finished diamonds:

Coster Diamonds

Gassan Diamonds

Stoeltie Diamonds

Van Moppes Diamonds the first company to offer guided tours.

If you have a chance eat an “uitsmijter” as well.

Best time to visit is april or late september when the leaves on the trees are not blocking the view of the monumental facades. The winters are penetratingly cold and damp with lots of rain and sleet.

It actually feels colder than 30 below in Canada.

Bring a pair of good glasses: we tend to use very small lettertypes for the legends in museums.

Here are some of Amsterdam’s major attractions:

Anne Frank House (Anne Frank Huis)

National Museum (Rijksmuseum)

Van Gogh Museum

Red Light District

National Museum of Modern Art (Stedelijk Museum)

Amstelkring Museum (Our Lord in the Attic Chapel)

Museum Het Rembrandt Huis (Rembrandt House)

Jewish Historical Museum (Joods Historisch Museum)

Dam Square

Sauna Deco

Amsterdam sail:

Sail Amsterdam

If you love boats, KNSM Island is where you should go. Not just because of its shipping past. Every 5 years this harbor area of Amsterdam hosts the Sail event. Each new edition attracts more visitors (Sail 2000 welcomed 2.5 million people). Each edition also offers more Tall Ships and more cultural activities in the area.

The Van Gogh Museum contains the largest collection of works by Vincent Van Gogh who shot off his ear and then committed suicide. You will find more than 200 fantastic works from the Master’s hand, as well as 500 drawings and 700 written documents. Together these provide a fantastic insight into his life and work.

Amasterdam is a fascinating place with lots of things to see and do.

Also, remember and try all its culinary delights.

Classical Concerts And Canals In Amsterdam

Apr-27-2010 Posted under Travel Insurance

There’s so much more to Holland’s capital than cannabis, coffee shops and the red light district. Though famed for its more seedy attractions, Amsterdam also offers plenty of high culture that doesn’t involve small bags of green herbs.

Grachtenfestival – Amsterdam’s annual canal festival – provides nine days of classical performances, made up of over 70 concerts held around 20 different locations, including a series of free performances given in the gardens and homes and on the roof terraces of canal side residents. The event, culminating with the impressive Prinesngracht concert, is held on a floating state in front of Hotel Pulitzer and attracts thousands of classical fans.

But Grachtenfestival isn’t all about old fashioned classical pieces; “Shhh…it Happens!” is a new breed of musical incorporating rock with classical music to create a musical noir that tells the story of a brother and sister who get mixed up with a bunch of out of control freaks in an abandoned theme park, which is guaranteed to take audiences on a rollercoaster ride

The festival also offers rare opportunities for aspiring classical musicians and singers to meet and learn from some of the greatest names in business. Opera singer Nelly Miricioiu, who has sung many parts in belcanto operas of Rossini, Donizett and Bellini, captivates opera audiences worldwide with her lyrical qualities and will be running a master class and searching for talented young singers during this year’s festival.

And if classical doesn’t cut it for you, Amsterdam has plenty of other festivals to float your canal boat. Queensday is the celebration of the Queen’s mother’s birthday, and the whole of Holland becomes one big party. Amsterdam turns orange and assumes a carnival atmosphere with big parties, Dutch and international artists and plenty of loud music.

Or how about Hartjesdagen, a festival where men come dressed as women and women come dressed as men, which some historians believe dates back to the Middle Ages. Film buffs can take pleasure in the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival, which celebrates a range of genres: fantasy, horror, scenic fiction, thriller, anime and cult, and incorporates both Dutch and international cinema.

With several airlines serving UK to Holland routes, making the journey is easy with plenty of flights to Amsterdam to choose from.

From classical concerts to Dutch carnivals, summer in Amsterdam is filled with festival fun, so it’s not surprising that plenty of people come to the city in search of more than just coffee shops and cannabis.

Ten Most Popular Amsterdam Attractions

Apr-27-2010 Posted under Travel Insurance
The historic city of Amsterdam has many attractions that draw tourists from around the world. The city is filled with picturesque canals, museums, Amsterdam hotels, cafes and art galleries. But Amsterdam is more than just beauty and culture. The nightlife is second to none.

There are many things to see and do in Amsterdam, but here is a list of the top 10 attractions:

1. Cruising the Canals

The city center of Amsterdam is criss-crossed with 165 canals, some of them dating back to the 13th century. You can walk or bike through this part of Amsterdam, and explore the canals and more than 1,200 bridges. Traditional canal houses are common along the tree-lined waterways. It is a peaceful area, mainly because the narrow lanes don’t allow for much automobile traffic.

2. The Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is the place to visit for an unparalleled look at the Dutch Golden Age of artwork. The entire museum is under renovation, but there are still many open exhibits for more than 400 of the Dutch Masters. Paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Jan Steen are on display. The museum is one of Amsterdam’s largest tourist attractions.

3. The Begijnhof

A 14th century court of houses surrounding an open garden is a lesser-known Amsterdam attraction. There is a Roman Catholic chapel in the compound that is also open to tourists. As a religious site, people are asked to be respectful when visiting Begijnhof, and even refrain from speaking while on the grounds.

4. Brown Caf

Romantic Breaks in Barcelona

Apr-27-2010 Posted under Travel Insurance
Are you a couple looking to make some romantic memories in Barcelona? There is always something new and exciting to experience in Spain’ second city. With a combination of long history and rich culture, you and your partner will have lots of choices to make on places to go and things to see. It’s really not surprising that couples from all over the world make the journey to Catalonia every year.

In Barcelona there is no shortage of attractions and Barcelona hotels to make your holiday one to remember, but the first place to start for couples should be Las Ramblas. If you are staying in the city centre, it will be your hub for all activity.

This bustling street extends from Monument a Colon – The Columbus Monument – to Placa Catalunya with lots of street attractions to be sampled along the way. You’ll find stalls – where you can pick up a few souvenirs – street acts and some of the best examples of gothic architecture anywhere in Europe. Although the sights on the street are more than enough to grab your attention, don’t forget to look up at these grand structures.

As far as museums are concerned, there are more than few that you should consider. For art lovers, there is no place better than the National Museum of Art of Catalonia, Here you’ll find one of the widest collections of Romanesque artwork to be found anywhere. The Archaeology Museum of Catalonia, meanwhile, looks back at the romantic beginnings of the city and its heritage.

Barcelona, it has to be said, is a great city to walk around in. No matter where you set off from, you are never too far away from any of the significant sites for tourism. From the middle of the city you can stroll past world-renowned sights such as Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia cathedral. Nearby is Barcelona Pavilion – one of the best examples of early 20th century modernist architecture. You can also admire the less famous but no less interesting attractions that make Barcelona what it is.

The best thing about walking around however – aside from allowing you to get your bearings – is that it’s free. Walking in Barcelona won’t cost you a thing but it will provide hours and hours of entertainment. For couples with a love of art, history and culture, this is the best way to get around.

Owing to its position right at the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona is also home to stunning beaches. Not only that but it also enjoys the fresh sea air and a pleasant seasonable climate. Barcelona is one of the few commercial centres in Europe to possess a beach of its own.

In the La Barceloneta neighbourhood you’ll find a sandy beach lined by palm trees and a large walkway. Here you take long meandering walks hand in hand, just enjoying each other’s company. In this same area, a massive selection of bars and restaurants welcome thousands of tourists every week, serving the ‘catch of the day’. They also plate up a variety of Catalonian dishes that you shouldn’t leave without tasting.

Forget any of Europe’s other cities of romance, for couples there is no place better than Barcelona. With sites of art, history and culture, whatever your tastes, you can be sure they will be catered for. All that’s left to do is enjoy your time in a simply stunning city with the one you love.

With so many things to see and do, where do you begin? This top-ten list of must-see New York City attractions is a good place to start.

The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most popular of all New York attractions and no trip to the Big Apple is complete without a visit to this iconic structure.

Standing at Liberty Island, in the mouth of the Hudson River in the New York Harbor, it welcomes visitors as it once did for the thousands of immigrants who arrived in New York by boat. The Statue of Liberty has come to symbolize freedom, independence and American values and is an attraction not to be missed by anyone visiting New York.

Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is possibly the most famous skyscraper in the world and one of the greatest New York attractions. New York to Europe – How to Fly Business Class From Only $1,550 Return

Apr-27-2010 Posted under Travel Insurance

Flying business or first class across the Atlantic has been out of reach for many travellers. Airline ticket prices from New York to Europe have ranged between $3,000 and $7,000 in business class. Here are some tips to reduce that airfare and help get you in to that business class premium cabin.

Tip 1: Fly All-Business Class L’Avion

L’Avion is an all-business class carrier serving Paris Orly from New York Newark. It flies twice daily using a Boeing 757 configured to 90 seats. Flights are available from $1,550 return.

Note that L’Avion is currently the only all-business carrier flying transatlantic after the recent bankruptcies of Maxjet, EOS Airlines and Silverjet.

Tip 2: Get a deal with BA’s OpenSkies

OpenSkies is a British Airways subsidiary which partners L’Avion and flies daily from Paris Orly to New York JFK. It also uses a Boeing 757 but is configured with 3 classes and a total of only 82 seats.

“Biz” class is BA’s top notch product and prices are available from $3,700 return. Economy fares are priced from under $1,000.

Watch for special offers and introductory prices as they expand their network around Europe over the next year or two.

Tip 3: Airfare Wars

The “open skies” agreement between the EU and US has opened up the market for transatlantic flights – resulting in lower airfares for the passenger.

The most competitive route is London – New York and prices have dropped to under $2,000 for some business class fares.

Keep an eye on the “war” between Air France (and its partner Delta) and British Airways (and partner American) as they encroach on each other’s territory.

Tip 4: Fly via Iceland

If flying transatlantic business class, get price quotations from the more ‘off-beat’ airlines that you may never have considered.

For example, Icelandair flies from London to New York via Reykjavik and can be extremely competitive with its Saga Class (business class) airfares. Prices are often under
