Taking a 2 wk. AK trip this summer.
Plan to fly into Fairbanks & work our way down… a couple days in Denali, take one or both legs of the train ride to Seward, then some time in Homer, Soldotna or Kenai, then fly home via Anchorage to Seattle.
Ideally we’d like to rent a car for Fairbanks/Denali to Anchorage, and go at our own pace. Then take the train from Anchorage to Seward, where we’d want to rent another car for the rest of the trip.Mini van, actually, as there will be at least 6 of us.
Trouble seems, a big hit in the wallet for returning the rentals to places other than the original pick up sites. We’d be doing this twice….Fairbanks to Anchorage, then Seward back to Anchorage.
It would seem there would be a fair number of visitors renting one-way. Can anyone recommend the best agencies for this?
Also, if we were to choose not to rent a car in Denali, how hard would it be to get around for groceries and such? Are there good places within walking distance, public transportation, etc? I know there are plenty of shuttles for getting around the parks, tours, and hotels, just wondering about the other stuff.
Thanks!
