Culture and Excitement in Russia!

May-27-2010 Posted under Travel Gear

When I go on holiday there are two things I am after. The first is some real excitement, like bungee jumping into a ravine, or white water rafting, and the second thing I look for is some real culture or history. I always bear these desires in mind when it comes to choosing a holiday destination, and this year after much searching I have decided upon Moscow. It seems that it has pretty much everything that I am looking for. The history of the place is immense. More has gone on in that city than most places in the world, and a trip to the Kremlin is a must do for any serious visitor. Not only that, but there is a fabulous array of places to visit to stimulate your cultural wishes. I found a great looking place online called the Moscow art theatre which looks just incredible. I think this will probably be one of the first places that I visit when I arrive in Moscow.

Beyond the stimulation of such cultural gems, I really need a bit of excitement when it comes to holidays. Gone are the days when my idea of fun was ten pints in the nearest pub followed by a day hungover on the beach! These days I would rather raise my spirits with action sports and things of a similar nature, and it turns out the Moscow really is a great location for anyone who is not faint hearted! I have discovered that you can actually travel to the Border of Space from by flying in a MIG-21 if you can believe it! That is 18 kilometres in an upwards direction! From here I will be able to see where the sky turns from blue to black, as our atmosphere meets space. Nothing could be more thrilling and this surely will be an experience of a lifetime.

A fantastic Holiday in Cyprus

May-25-2010 Posted under Travel Gear

I had been searching for somewhere cheap to take my family on holiday for weeks online, without coming up with anything that gave me the wow factor. I was unfortunately governed heavily by price, so the choice seemed to be a bit thin. Despite enjoying them in the past, I just didn’t want to spend a week in a tent in the north of France freezing cold in the communal showers! I didn’t need luxury, just a nice apartment with air conditioning and a bit of heat from the Mediterranean sun.

Luckily for me a friend called round that had recently been to Cyprus. I had never been to that part of the world but she told me that it had been the nicest place that they had been to for years! And I knew that they had all over Europe on holiday in recent years.

This convinced me to go online that very day and see if I could find us all a nice and affordable Cyprus Holiday. As soon as I started to hunt around I came across quite a few offers. All of the accommodation looked very nice and I was pleased to see some beautiful photo’s of what can only be described as heavenly beaches. I booked our holiday then and there, knowing that this was definitely the best we could do at this very affordable price.

Our holiday in Cyprus is one that I will never forget. Beautiful beaches, a bit of history, great food and some wonderful memories. I am always wary of the standard of accommodation when I go to Europe but I can honestly say that we had everything we needed and the apartment was clean and cool, and they had air conditioning! It was a wonderful holiday and I can’t wait to get back there next year!

Cool conference venues

May-25-2010 Posted under Travel Gear

If you want a cool conference, you need a cool venue. Somewhere different. Somewhere unique. Somewhere with the ‘Wow’ factor. Find a location with all these elements and you’re well on the way to organising an event that is remembered and talked about for all the right reasons.

One such place is Alton Towers Resort in the heart of the Midlands. Recent winner of a ‘Coolest Venue for Corporate Fun 2010’ award by Prestige Events Magazine, this leading Midlands conference centre caters for events ranging in size from 16 delegates up to a staggering 15,000+ where guests have full use of the rides and attractions! With a truly flexible approach to tailoring your event to your needs, you can do everything from having a scream of a time with an exclusive use of a ride, to enjoying a splashing exotic beach party in the Water Park. There are of course, a full range of corporate packages to make sure you find just what you’re looking for. Whichever you choose, you’re assured an event which is a thrill-packed experience.

For a more laid-back venue, there is The Mermaid conference and events centre set on the North Bank of the Thames. With spectacular views towards the Tate Modern, Globe Theatre and the Millennium Bridge, this is one venue which leaves a lasting impression. A striking setting, the Mermaid can cater for up to 600 delegates thanks to its impressive Auditorium.

For an event that goes where no event has ever gone before, blast off to the National Space Centre. Here your delegates can watch a show in one of the UK’s largest planetariums with seating for 160 people, dine under giant rockets and even try their hand at a simulated space mission as they run mission control. With a range of rooms and theatres also available to hire, it’s safe to say that an event at the National Space Centre is will be out of this world.

If you’d rather step back in time, than head into the future, try the Great North Museum:Hancock in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Catering for events ranging in size from 12 to 500 people, you can provide an unforgettable experience which includes a life-size T-Rex dinosaur skeleton, spectacular objects from Ancient Greece and mummies from Ancient Egypt.

Villas and Apartments in Lanzarote

Apr-21-2010 Posted under Travel Gear

Lanzarote was made for self catering holidays.  As this sun soaked Canary Island is home to wide range of villa and apartment accommodation.  Often available at prices much cheaper than on other Spanish holiday islands.  Thanks to the fact that the weather here creates a year round holiday season, with warm temperatures whatever the time of the year.

Lanzarote has been welcoming holidaymakers since the 1970´s and self catering properties have been central to the offering here since that time.  Growing to such an extent that today there are thousands of Lanzarote villas available for rent in all locations across the island.  Along with hundreds of apartment complexes.

The largest resort on the island is called Puerto del Carmen and this is where visitors will find the biggest range of self catering accommodation.  The best villas in Puerto del Carmen are located in and around the Old Town area and the residential area of Los Mojones.  Which provides a peaceful location whilst still in close proximity to the beaches, bars and restauarants of this bustling resort.

There are also loads of apartment complexes in Puerto del Carmen and these offer seriously good value accommodation with prices starting from as little as €180 per week.

Villas in Playa Blanca are also hugely popular with British holidaymakers – especially during the winter months. As the weather here can be much better than in the north of the island at that time of year.  Enjoying sunshine whilst resorts such as Costa Teguise are shrouded in cloud. Playa Blanca also offers great beaches and plenty of decent restaurants.  And for anyone keen to explore another Canary Island Fuerteventura is just a short ferry ride away across the Bocaina Straits.

For the really intrepid tourist there is also the option of visiting the 8th Canary Island of La Graciosa.  Which is so small and unknown that it doesn’t feature in any tour operator brochures.  However the beaches here are amazing and visiting the island is like stepping back in time.  A there are no roads or cars here and just one village – which is home to the island’s 600 residents.

La Graciosa can be reached by a short ferry journey from Orzola in the north of Lanzarote and is ideal for anyone who really wants to get off the beaten track.  Offering tranquillity and natural beauty in equal amounts.

Me and the guys in Egypt

Apr-10-2010 Posted under Travel Gear

When you think of great locations for lads abroad, Egypt isn’t the first that springs to mind. Mind you, my friends and I don’t like to think of ourselves as typical lads. Our idea of a lads night out will probably involve a few pleasant drinks, followed by a couple of games of pool and an early night so that we can cram as much sight-seeing in on the following day. That probably sounds boring to most people but when the world is such an amazing place and you live on a council estate in Birmingham, you want to take in as much beauty as you possibly can!

Our last holiday had been to a couple of the Greek islands in the Dodecanese, and that was beautiful. The great thing about Greek islands is that because of the colonial changes there have been over the last few hundfred years, you really get a sense for the different cultures that flow from the place. I loved the eastern influence some of the islands seemed to enjoy, and that is one of the reasons that I wanted to visit Egypt. One of our fears was that it might be a bit too expensive for us to get to – but a quick check on the internet put paid to that thought. I cam across a site which had great prices for package holidays to Egypt and it turned out to be not much more expensive than our last holiday! We immediately booked out Egypt holidays and started to prepare for the holiday of our lives!

The holiday didn’t disappoint and to this day I would say that my holiday to Egypt has been my best ever. I couldn’t recommend the place highly enough and I can’t wait to get back there!

Is it bad to run my Jeep at a constant 3000 RPM?

Feb-5-2010 Posted under Travel Gear
I drive an 03 Jeep Wrangler TJ 5 spd with 31″ by 12.5″ tires and stock gearing, and I go over a mountain twice every day to get to work and back home.
A sign on the road (mountain) tells me that it has a 8% grade. I asume that that is the steepest it gets.
I travel up one side in 3rd gear at 55mph at about 3000rpm for probably a little over 5 minutes, and then coming back the same thing but for almost 10 minutes.
Is this bad?
I do it because 4th cant take it and it slows going up.
I put it in 5th at the top all the way down.

My car’s automatic transmission is getting stuck in 2nd gear. Why?

Sep-18-2009 Posted under Travel Gear
My car came out gear and into neutral while driving on the highway. When I shifted back into drive, I was in 2nd gear and it would not change the proper gear, so the rpms were running high. I pulled over and let the car cool down. The problem went away when I started out again, but it happened again about 3 miles into my travels. This time I was on the city roads and not the highway. What could be the problem?

Problem with gear box?

Sep-6-2009 Posted under Travel Gear
Every time I take my foot off my accelerator, my gear stick jerks upwards and my car jerks. It doesn’t matter how fast I’m travelling or which gear I’m in.

My car is quite old (nearly 10) and has done about 150,000 miles
